DX Hiker Craig at Dragon's ToothVirginia... and Beyond!

Welcome to DXHiker.com, dedicated to the beauty and splendor of western Virginia's mountains, a hiker's delight! From the Blue Ridge mountains to the Allegheny mountains, Virginia has much to offer the hiking enthusiast. In fact, more than a quarter of the 2,150 mile Appalachian Trail is located in this state!

"DX" is shorthand for "distance," which is to say that my hiking interests go well beyond just "a walk in the park." I love the outdoors and have a passion for nature and the mountains. Hiking imparts so many gifts... alone it is solitude, meditation, and replenishment; with a companion, it is an exploration of our environment and of our connection to nature and to each other. Staying fit in body and mind are big priorities for me, and hiking offers both!

The official "DX Hiker" tagWithin this site you will find detailed information about the paths I've traveled, with links to my area hike reports on LocalHikes.com, including maps, hike descriptions, points of interest, trail photos, and recommended links and guidebooks. I've also included my personal hiking journal for an incredible year of hiking, special destinations, area weather, Virginia photography, links to my favorite Virginia-related hiking web sites, exclusive DX Hiker Virginia trail maps, and suggestions as to what you need to consider before going on your own hike. Currently in development and coming soon, a comprehensive feature on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. I hope you enjoy your visit and find the information useful. If you have any questions about Virginia hiking or this site, don't be shy... drop me a line at craig@dxhiker.com.

Always remember that it's not the destination that's important, it's the journey...

Featured Hike... Fallingwater Cascades Loop
Featured Hike - Fallingwater Cascades LoopThe trail begins to descend immediately through rhododendrons, hemlock, and striped maple, opening to views of the cascades (Fallingwater Creek) and surrounding terrain. The path is quite steep in areas but stone steps are provided to lessen the impact. Several benches are also provided along the way. A number of fairly easy creek crossings are required...  Go To Fallingwater Cascades Loop
World Top Ten Trek... Arizona's Havasu Canyon Trail

Go To Havasu Canyon TrailThe destination for millions of visitors each year is the awesome grandeur of the Grand Canyon, and many hiking opportunities are found within the boundaries of Grand Canyon National Park. But large crowds are not my idea of a quality hiking experience. Fortunately, one of the top ten treks of the world is located on the western edge of the canyon..Go To Havasu Canyon Trail

World Top Ten Trek... Peru's Inca Trail

Go To Inca TrailWhat makes the Inca Trail a magnet for hikers from all over the world? Many countries have mountain ranges with beautiful scenery and Peru itself is richly blessed in this respect with many other areas for hiking. However the scenery is only one of the elements responsible for the magic of the Inca Trail. Can there be any walk anywhere in the world...  Go To Inca Trail
